Governor Biographies

Wyndham Rogers-Coltman - Community

Wyndham is Chairman of Governors.  He has served on the Governing Body since Autumn 1984 and has been Chairman since 1993.  For 13 years he served in the Royal Navy specialising in Anti Submarine Warfare.  He left in 1964 to farm in Northumberland.  He won a Fuffield Farming Scholarship in 1978 and was made an Officer of The Order of The British Empire for Public Service in 1989.  He started Lowick Farmers Silos in 1969 amd managed it until its sale in 1990.  He was founder chairman of Bedmax Ltd for 5 years.  The company is based at Detchant, near Belford, and is the largest maker of dust free horse bedding in Western Europe with three factories in England and considerable export trade around the world.  He founded The North of England Arable Centre in conjunction with Newcastle University Faculty of Agriculture and served as its Chairman until it merged with The Arable Research Centre.  He served on the Main Board of The National Rivers Authority and was responsible for the well being of all the rivers from Sheffield to Berwick upon Tweed as Chairman of the Northumbria and Yorkshire Region of the NRA.  Following the merger of the NRA into the Environment Agency he moved onto the main board of the Countryside Commission where he served as a Countryside Commissioner with special responsibility for all National Parks and the North East Region in particular.  He served on the Northumbrian Land Drainage Committee for 8 years and the Minister of Agriculture's Northern Advisory Panel for another 8 years.  He was County Councillor for Berwick North for 8 years and served on the Northumbria Sea Fisheries Committee and the Northumberland and Tyne and Wear Valuation Panel during that time.  He chaired the Berwick on Tweed Single Regeneration Committee from 2001-2005.  He feels he has done his bit for Queen and Country and is retiring from public service in the autumn of 2011.

John Reed - Parent

John Reed is a Chartered Chemist and Manager at Future Industrial Services in Berwick.  He lives in Berwick and all three of his children attended Berwick Academy.  He has been involved as a School Governor for a number of years having been Chairman of Governors at the local Primary School in the Lake District before moving to Berwick 10 years ago.  In addition, John's wife provides Special Needs support at Borders College.  John's other interests include long distance cycling and running as supporting his home town football team i,e. Sunderland.

Gail Jones - Parent

Gail Jones is a parent governor with one son at Berwick Academy and one at Berwick Middle School.  Gail and her family moved to Berwick three years ago for a lifestyle change.  She owns a small local business.  Prior to that she worked for Greaves West and Ayre as a trainer.  She is a qualified Chartered Accountant and worked in training for 18 years.  She attended Nottingham University where she studied French and Spanish.  As a governor she wishes to do her best to help the pupils and staff of Berwick Academy.  As for hobbies and interests it goes without saying that with two boys there is no spare time!

Eleanor Taylor - Community

Alan Bowlas - Community

Alan's career involves some 30 years in sales, marketing and retail operations in the oil industry with Esso-Cleveland and British Petroleum now retired is actively involved locally as an elected Town Councillor, as a board member of Berwick Community Development Trust, advisor to BC Consultants at Borders College and being a governor at Berwick Academy a position he has held for a number of years.  Main outside interests, collecting art, fly fishing, shooting and bowling as a member of Berwick Bowling Club.

Colin Frame - Community

Colin acts as a Community Governor representing Berwick Rugby Club, where he is currently President.  Colin has three children with one currently a pupil at Berwick Academy with another coming in 2011.  He is a partner in the local Chartered Accountancy business Greaves West and Ayre.  Colin moved to Berwick in 1990 to take up a training post with Greaves West and Ayre and has remained with them ever since.  In the workplace Colin deals with many businesses including a number of local charities and community groups.  His personal interests include rugby, travel, reading and film.

Gavin Jones - Community

Gavin runs a local business with his wife Gail.  He also works as a Client Director for a pan-European business and systems consulting firm.  Gavin previously lived and worked in South East England and prior to that in New Zealand and Australia.  Gavin has degrees in Science, Business and Law and an interest in viticulture.

Harvey Scott - Local Authority

Harvey is your Vice Chairman of Governors has an honours degree in Economics from St Andrews University, and is also a Chartered Accountant.  Harvey lives and works in Edinburgh and is a Senior Manager for Deloitte LLP serving clients in the Asset Management industry.  He grew up in Berwick upon Tweed and is a former pupil of the school.  Harvey takes a particular interest in the exam performance of the school as is Chairman of the Curriculum Committee.  In his spare time Harvey enjoys motor sport, politics, travel, and bowling, and is a member of Spittal Bowling Club.

Anne-Marie Trevelyan - Local Authority

Anne-Marie Trevelyan is a self-employed financial consultant and the Parliamentary Spokesman for the Conservative Party for Berwick upon Tweed.  She lives near Rothbury with her family, and is passionate about ensuring all children can access the right education for their needs, with a particular interest in special needs provision, an area she is very involved in due to direct family experience.  Anne-Marie is also a public governor on the NHS Northumbria Hospital Trust and a Trustee of Alnwick Community Development Trust.

Tim Roake - Teacher

Time Roake is the Staff Governor and was elected in October 2009.  He has degrees in Economics and Politics and currently teaches History and Business at Berwick Academy.  Tim entered teaching relatively late in life, having worked in clearing banks and the London money markets when in his twenties.  Nowadays, Tim has a busy home life with four children; two of whom are at Berwick Academy.  Having lived in Berwick for nine years, Tim is quite a well-known local figure and is an active member of the Berwick Operatic Society.

Chris Hardie was born and educated in Berwick.  Following a degree in Engineering & Management and a spell teaching at Berwick High School, Chris has spent much of his working life in industry and management consulting in several countries around the world.  His current role is owner and managing director of Martins the Printers in Spittal.  He is also the chair of the Berwick Business Forum and is passionate about creating a thriving local business economy and maximising the opportunities for pupils at all levels both locally and nationally.
